Initially, failure to thrive, and increased susceptibility to infections are indicators of SCID. When normal infant infections (ear infections, sinus infections, oral thrush, diarrhea) last unusually long, it is a sign of weakened immune system.
Extreme symptoms within the first year of life include:
- eight or more ear infections
- two or more sinus infections/ cases of pneumonia/
deep infections which affect entire organs or
require IV antibiotics
- lack of response to antibiotics

Doctor will diagnose a child with SCID when he shows:
- abnormally low lymphocyte count
- abnormally low T- and B- call count
- unusual infection for a prolongd period of time
